Sony's Hybrid Fuel System for Mobile Devices

Sony announced the next phase of implementation to create a hybrid fuel system, running on methanol. A prototype of the system is quite compact (5 x 3 cm), includes a DMFC-fuel element, a subsidiary lithium-polymer battery, a chip with the regulator administering the fuel supply.

The system is based on direct dissolution of methanol, which is made using the DMFC-technology (direct methanol fuel cell). The system is active, managing the supply of fuel through the pump, and supply it to a type of hybrid, as it has an additional battery support.
According to specialists, the new system can provide the power output of 3 W, which is sufficient for peak power in mobile devices. With the volume of the fuel container in 10 Ml, without refueling system can provide continuous 14 - hour work mode mobile digital TV reception.

"Our goal was to create a system that can be built into mobile device", - told the specialist from Sony Material Laboratory. The new fuel system was formally presented at an international conference of Small Fuel Cells 2008, held from April 30 to May 2 in Atlanta (USA).

The company contends that the results suggest the possibility of commercialization of the project, although the timing of its introduction has not yet been covered.
